Innovation dans le domaine de Computing and Communication Systems Engineering

Since 2009, IEM laboratories have developed very important scientific contributions in the domain of computing and communication systems engineering to tackle the new challenges due to the Big Data and ubiquitous communication. In this area, IEM laboratories have collaborated with key companies in communication and systems design (Huawei, Cisco, Qualcomm, Google, Microsoft, etc.). First of all, dealing with the foundations of communication, at IEM it has been shown the potential of optical microresonators and soliton waves of light to produce evenly spaced frequencies of light, or « frequency combs », which can be used in to increase communication efficiency in telecommunications. Also, IEM labs have demonstrated how to dramatically increase in the capacity of optical fibers by innovative solutions that reduce the space required between the pulses of light that transport data, which provides an increased throughput of data in telecommunications systems by up to a factor of ten. Also, IEM has shown the potential of reconfigurable antennas based on novel nano-materials, such as graphene, to dramatically extend the antenna efficiency very close to its theoretical limits.

Second, IEM has proposed in this period key contributions for the development of low-power VLSI signal processing for communications systems, In particular, new communication algorithms for communication systems with multiple inputs and multiples outputs (MIMO), as well as optimization of their hardware implementations based on approximate computing have been proposed, which have enable dramatic energy reductions per transmitted bit in latest generation of wireless communication transceivers.
