STI Sustainability

The STI Sustainability Office is responsible for the environmental sustainability of the School of Engineering.

Our ecosystem

STI Sustainability reports to the Head of Infrastructure and aims to be integrated into the scientific, administrative and student community of STI. Our close collaboration with EPFL Sustainability allows us to carry out sustainability projects taking into account the specificities of our School. 

Sustainability in STI

Scientific research is at the heart of what we do at EPFL. Since our research activities also have an impact on the environment, we’re taking steps to measure and reduce this impact and shrink our carbon footprint. To that end, we’re developing new research systems and methods, and carrying out a number of pilot projects to help our research staff measure their labs’ carbon emissions. This information will allow our scientists and engineers to enhance their lab operating procedures without compromising the quality of their research results.

EVALUATE

Perform an environmental footprint (carbon and potentially other indicators such as water, plastic) at the lab or project scale following the GHG Protocol and ISO 14040 or 14044 standards

PLAN

Co-development of an action plan and strategy with the research team, by identifying actions that have high environmental impact reduction and high feasibility, keeping in mind the associated cost

TRANSFORM

Action plan implementation that can involves changes in lab operations, procurement, waste management, as well as stakeholder engagement and communication to the wider STI / EPFL community
