[LAMMM] William Curtin has been awarded an ADVANCED GRANT 2013 from ERC.

[LAMMM] Professor William Curtin, Director of the Laboratory for Multiscale Mechanics Modeling at the School of Engineering, has been awarded an ADVANCED GRANT 2013 from the European Research Council (ERC).

The title of the 5 year research project is "Predictive Computational Metallurgy", with an emphasis on mechanistic understanding of how multiple types of defects in metals (solutes, dislocations, grain boundaries, cracks) interact and thereby control the macroscopic mechanical behavior of a given metal alloy. The research will be carried out using simulation methods ranging from quantum mechanics to continuum mechanics, including innovative multiscale methods. The research will also develop mechanistic physical models that generalize the results of the simulations and enable for the development of advanced constitutive models for describing the macroscopic mechanical deformation and fracture of metals.
