BSc in Microengineering

The bachelor forms a structured collection of lectures, exercises, practical works and projects aimed at providing a solid basis for your engineering studies. It includes a one year foundation cycle (“propédeutique”) followed by two years that build together the bachelor cycle with its 180 ECTS.

The first year emphasizes the basic sciences that build the polytechnic core of studies at EPFL (mathematics, physics, computer sciences), as well as an introduction to engineering and global issues. At the end of the first year, you must pass the “propédeutique” exam, which corresponds to 60 ECTS.

Already during this first year, you will discover several facets of microengineering, especially basics of electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as processes that are used to build microstructures. Theory classes are always accompanied with exercises and small projects that help master concepts and gain hands-on experience that will be helpful for your future career.

The bachelor cycle includes the following two years and requires accruing 120 ECTS. Whilst some advanced basic sciences concepts are still taught at this stage, emphasis is put on microengineering and its different components: electronics, mechanics, computer sciences, materials, components and their integration in more and more sophisticated systems and robots.

All the different theoretical concepts discovered during that cycle are put in perspective and applied during advanced practical works and projects. At the end of the cycle you will receive a bachelor, which opens the doors for various master programmes, at EPFL or other institutions internationally.
