Motivation
Energy conversion and energy systems have and will shape the evolution of mankind. Future generations will rely on energy made available by massive renewable resources. The inherent nature of these resources is posing unprecedented technical and management challenges to engineers. According to an analysis published in the Renewable Energy and Jobs Annual Review 2017 by the International Renewable Energy Agency.
- jobs in the energy sector could rise from 9.8 million in 2016 to 24 million in 2030, following an accelerated ramp up in line with global climate imperatives (IRENA, 2017b);
- job opportunities will be created along the different segments of the value chain, withincreasing requirements for individuals with diverse skill-sets and talents;
- significant efforts in training and education is needed to provide the labor market with the required skills
To respond to such challenges, the EPFL has created a strong education program covering the fields of energy and sustainability.
Program overview
The Master program in Energy Science and Technology responds to the growing needs of training modern engineers in the energy domain beyond the sectorial fields of electrical and mechanical engineering, material science, operational research and management. The Master in Energy Science and Technology trains students to acquire integrated competences that will make them able to tackle the above-mentioned challenges in the energy sector.
The program is structured to train students on the following macro-subjects:
- Design of energy conversion devices.
- Modelling and operation of energy networks (i.e., transmission and distribution electrical systems, interconnected electricity, heat, fuels and chemical networks as well as chemical and electrochemical storage systems).
- End-uses and applications including urban systems and buildings, mobility and industrial processes.
- Energy systems analysis, management, economics and policies.
In addition to attending regular lectures offered by our internationally recognized professors, students participate in various laboratories and group projects. The Master program in Energy Science and Technology covers both theoretical foundations and practical aspects of the discipline. The structure of the master program is thought in such a way that students with different backgrounds can join and follow the program successfully. It is made of a block of mandatory common core courses (22 ECTS) and a set of complementary courses (20 ECTS) depending on the background of the student.
To color their study plan, students have to choice one orientation (23 ECTS) among the three following ones:
i) Energy Conversion Devices
ii) Energy Systems
iii) Energy Management and Sustainability
Finally students complete their studies with hands-on labs and projects (16 ECTS) as well as some elective courses or an additional project (9 ECTS). The studies are crowned with the Master thesis (30 ECTS).
Students will be prepared for a wide variety of professions in energy management and sustainability, smart grids technologies, mechatronics, power electronics and systems, electric drives, efficient conversion and storage, renewable energies design and system integration. The degree of this Master is an excellent preparation for both research at the PhD level and professional activities in world-class industries and technology companies.
Who should apply
The Masters program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering is open to candidates with a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Micro Engineering, or any related field from a recognized university. The recruitment of international MS students is done on a merit basis.
