MSc in Mechanical Engineering
Master’s Program Objectives
The mechanical engineering Master’s program provides training in both general concepts and specialized subjects. For example, you could learn how to analyse the air flow around the wing of an airplane, help create a better prosthetic knee or work with a team of interdisciplinary involved in exciting projects. As a general guideline, the Master in Mechanical Engineering at EPFL consists of two components equalling 120 credits.
The first 90 credits provide the foundation of your engineering knowledge from a choice of courses and projects in six specific domains called “specializations”. Two other domains, Automobile and Aerospace, are available with double degree. The last 30 credits are related to a Master’s thesis project.
Every student must choose 74 credits (or 44, in case they do a 30 credit minor), the last 16 credits are to be done in the “Project” block. If the students wish to follow a specialization, they must choose at least 30 credits in the course list recommended by the corresponding specialization and have their Master Course selection form validated and signed by the specialization advisor, before they hand it in to the SGM Secretariat. Note that a form is also required in case students wish to register Mechanical engineering Bachelor courses (up to two), with the signature and former approval of the Section Director. More information on the Master’s Mechanical Engineering page.
Double degrees
Two agreements on a double degree reached
- between EPFL and ISAE (Institut Supérieur de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace, ex SUPAERO, Toulouse)
- between EPFL and TUM (Technische Universität München)
lead to the creation of two additional orientations, respectively in aerospatial and automotive engineering.
Multi-disciplinary Degree
For students wishing to obtain a multi-disciplinary degree, the Master program in Mechanical Engineering also gives the option to complete a minor by taking 30 credits in one of the minors offered in other complementary programs at the EPFL. The ME Section recommends the seven following minors:
- Minor in Energy
- Minor in Science, Technology and Area Studies
- Minor in Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship
- Minor in Computational Science & Engineering
- Minor in Materials Science & Engineering
- Minor in Biomedical Technologies
- Minor in Space Technologies
Detailed outlines of these minors are available on the registration office’s (SAC) web page and the catalogue of courses available below for downloading On completion of this program, students will be awarded with a “Master of Sciences in Mechanical Engineering” degree.
