Mechanics of Solids and Structures

In Solid Mechanics a study is made of the properties of materials in different contexts: under stress, during fracture, while buckling. Their behaviour is analysed and simulated, so that predictions can be made about how they are likely to behave.

In addition to this research is carried out on the use of new solids put to mechanical purposes, such as artificial muscles and regenerated bone tissue.

The Insitute of Mechanical Engineering has access to a wide range of facilities for the analysis and simulation of solid mechanics, including the Centre for MicroNanoTechnology.
