Minor

A minor allows you to complement your Materials Science and Engineering education with in-depth knowledge in another field. It can be particularly valuable if you have a specific interdisciplinary interest or wish to develop expertise that complements your Materials background and may be useful for your future studies or career. EPFL offers minors in a wide range of fields, giving you the opportunity to tailor your Master’s degree to your interests and professional goals.

If you choose to pursue a minor, the 30 ECTS credits required for the minor will count towards the Option group of the Materials Science and Engineering Master’s study plan. Before choosing a minor, we recommend that you carefully review its requirements and course structure. If you have any questions, please discuss your choice with the minor coordinator and the section before registering for courses.

The complete list of minors is available here. SMX students may choose any minor, but the SMX Section considers the following minors particularly relevant to Materials Science and Engineering:

– Management, Technology and Entrepreneurship (MTE)

– Mechanical engineering (GM)

– Sustainable construction (GC)

– Engineering for sustainability (SSIE

The deadline to register for a minor is the end of the first semester of your Master’s program. We therefore recommend that you explore the available options early in the semester and make sure that your chosen minor can be integrated into your study plan.

Minor in Materials Science and Engineering

The Minor in Materials Science and Engineering provides students with fundamental knowledge of the relationships between the structure, properties, performance, and processing of materials. Based on the Materials Science and Engineering Master’s program, the minor offers students from other engineering disciplines the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of materials and develop a better understanding of how materials influence the design, performance, and manufacturing of engineering systems.

Admission criteria

The minor is open to EPFL students from all programs except Materials Science and Engineering. Enrollment requires prior approval from the student’s home section.

The deadline to register for the MX minor is the end of the first semester of your Master’s program. Please complete the registration form by listing the courses according to the list and submit a copy to smx@epfl.ch and your section.
